Leadership

Find the Leader Within is a 6-month leadership program funded by the FACET Foundation. The objective is to help graduates age 18–25 years old find employment, start their own business or return to school, depending on their individual goals.

Through this work, SSI is helping young people become self-sufficient leaders in their communities. The program offers the following modules where participants learn:

Leadership Skills: Youth learn principles that define leadership and are given opportunities to define their own; they develop an understanding of different leadership types and styles; we contextualize leadership and discuss the power of having influence on others, and the responsibility that comes with that. We aim to help them identify and develop leadership qualities and better identify and understand their personal leadership style and strengths.

Career Skills: Here we focus on career identification and development. Participants identify different types of career options in their field of interest and attend sessions on CV and cover letter writing as well as mock interviews to prepare them for success in the workforce.

Business & Financial Literacy: Using the Aflateen curriculum, these sessions focus on personal understanding and exploration, spending wisely, budgeting and SMART goals.

Healthy Lifestyles: Participants are equipped with skills for healthy living. Sessions focus on self-care, physical health, mental health, emotional health, psychological health and social wellbeing.

Computer Training: Sessions focus on equipping participants with basic computer skills. Much of this training is introductory level as most participants enter the program with little to no prior computer experience or exposure.

Partnerships

Upon successful completion, program participants enroll in a three- to six-week job shadowing experience with one of SSI’s many company partners.

We partner with local companies and businesses that engage our participants in their organisations to expose them to real work experiences. ABSA Ready to Work

As a final component of the leadership program, participants learn the primary training modules: Money Skills, People Skills, Work Skills and Entrepreneurial Skills through the ABSA Ready to Work program. After learning the modules, participants are tested on their knowledge, and passing participants receive award certificates during a graduation ceremony.

SSI and ABSA Botswana have been partners in successfully helping youth prepare for success since 2009. Our Ready to Work partnership extends to additional programs that SSI facilitates to other youth aged 18 – 24 outside of our core program areas.
