Official opening of the Counselling block
A safe space for children to explore their emotions and learn healthy ways to communicate
Private space is crucial for child counseling to foster a safe, confidential environment where children feel secure and can openly share their thoughts and feelings, building trust and facilitating effective therapy. Children, especially those facing challenges, need to know their interactions with a counsellor will be kept private, this sense of confidentiality is vital for building trust, which is the foundation of any successful therapeutic relationship. Stepping Stones International understands that when children know their thoughts and feelings will be respected and kept private, they are more likely to open up and share their experiences, which is essential for effective therapy. With this in mind, SSI approached the Japanese Embassy in Botswana, who assisted by donating funds for the construction of a Counselling block at our main centre located in Mochudi, 50km north of the capital Gaborone.
The building was officially opened by Honourable Assistant Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, Mr Mabuse Pule, who, in his remarks, emphasised the importance of a private space that allows the counsellors to focus solely on the child’s needs and concerns, without distractions or interruptions. The child friendly counselling block has three counselling rooms, one case conference room and two bathrooms. The building will go a long way in ensuring that our beneficiaries receive the best in quality service. The centre will also be used for various therapeutic activities, such as play therapy, art therapy, or other creative interventions that may be necessary for children to express themselves.
