Barclays Bank, Skillshare Intl. and SSI Bring Financial Literacy to Francistown Youth

Stepping Stones International (SSI) has already seen great results with it’s Barclays Bank funded, Aflateen Income Generation Programme. The programme has successfully installed budding programmes in local schools in The Kgatleng District, Botswana.

Aflateen is a social and financial literacy programme specially adapted for teens to empower themselves to become self-sustaining in their personal lives and community. The Aflateen programme accomplishes this by training facilitators who lead lessons and practical activities to encourage participants to start start their own social and financial enterprises. The programme is buttressed by one the leading banks in Africa. Barclays Bank with decades of experience in the financial world, represent a perfect partner to guide the programme along using its extensive resources and financial networks.

SSI was glad to be able to extend the tenets of this programme to the far-reaching areas of the country. Skillshare International , an organisation that strives for sustainable development in Africa and Asia by sharing skills, engaged SSI in their mission. SSI was asked to provide Aflateen Social and Financial Literacy training for youth aged 18-25yrs as part of their “Game Changers Project.” Youth were recruited by Skillshare International on the basis that they were out-of-school and/or unemployed.

The Aflateen training was conducted in Francistown and Selebi Phikwe and was well attended by over 55 people, including 50 youth from Francistown, Tutume, Masung, Selebi Phikwe and Bobonong. The session was a great success employing a mixed teaching and facilitation methodology, focusing on practical topics like: Saving and Spending, planning and budgeting, and social and financial enterprise. The sessions culminated in certificate presentations, graduation and more importantly a set of youth with practical financial skills that they will be able to use in future.

Excited youth received certificates after an extensive 4-day training session.

We’d like to thank Skillshare International for the invitation. We were glad to be able to have a forum to continue to teach financial literacy around the country. We’d also like to thank Barclays Bank for continual support of our resoundingly successful Aflateen Income Generation Programme.
